The Falcon 9 is able to launch satellites at just one-third of the cost of its competitors, thanks to its reusable first stage.

The Falcon Heavy, an even larger rocket, is also significantly cheaper and regularly used by NASA, the US military, and competitors like Amazon’s Leo satellites. SpaceX now accounts for the majority of rocket launches worldwide, outpacing other private companies and nations combined. “Having a reusable launch vehicle has been a game changer in terms of increasing access to space,” said Victoria Samson, an expert in space technology.

SpaceX’s latest project, Starship, is a giant leap toward Elon Musk’s race for space and his dream of colonizing Mars. The Starship rocket, designed to carry humans and cargo to Mars, will attempt its first uncrewed flight to the red planet by the end of next year. “I think Elon Musk is serious about wanting to go to Mars,” said Victoria Samson. “In fact, I think that’s why he established SpaceX to begin with.” Musk has held this vision since 2001, even before founding SpaceX. “It’s not about going to Mars to visit once; it’s about making life multi-planetary,” Musk explained in a May interview.
