ÖBB Expands Rail Freight Links to Romania and Western Europe

ÖBB Rail Cargo Group is expanding its ÖBB TransFER services to better serve customers in Romania and Western Europe. As part of this effort, the company has upgraded its intermodal rail network with new routes and higher frequencies.

Specifically, it replaced the old Genk–Curtici connection with a new TransFER Liège–Curtici service. Now, this route runs seven round trips per week from Liège. Importantly, Liège sits at the heart of the Benelux region. From there, it connects smoothly to the ports of Rotterdam, Antwerp, and Zeebrugge. Moreover, it links seaports to industrial centers and inland markets across Europe.

At the same time, ÖBB launched TransFER Duisburg–Curtici. This new service focuses on continental freight flows. Currently, it operates three return trips weekly. Together, these two routes significantly strengthen rail access to the Railport Arad terminal in Curtici through major Western European hubs.

What truly sets ÖBB TransFER services apart is their reliability. Like passenger trains, they run on fixed schedules with set stops. As a result, customers enjoy predictable transit times. They can book containers, swap bodies, or conventional wagons. Today, ÖBB offers over 60 such connections across Europe and into Asia. In addition, the company provides first- and last-mile delivery, transshipment, storage, and customs handling.

According to Christoph Grasl, Chief Commercial Officer of ÖBB Rail Cargo Group, “The continuous development of our ÖBB TransFER services shows how we align with customer needs. By offering direct, reliable links to key logistics hubs, we create strong incentives to shift freight from road to rail.”

Beyond Romania, ÖBB is also boosting its Western European network. For example, it introduced TransFER Duisburg–Rotterdam, which links Rheinkamp near Duisburg to the Port of Rotterdam. Initially, the service runs three round trips per week. It serves major terminals like Waalhaven, Europoort, Botlek, Pernis, and Maasvlakte.

Additionally, the company added TransFER Salzburg–Offenbach. This non-stop route connects Austria and Germany. It directly links Salzburg’s rail hub with Offenbach—a key logistics center near Frankfurt. Starting soon, the service will operate two round trips weekly.

Overall, these upgrades reflect ÖBB’s commitment to greener, more efficient freight. By providing scheduled, door-to-hub rail options, ÖBB TransFER services help cut emissions while ensuring on-time delivery. Consequently, more businesses can choose sustainable alternatives without sacrificing reliability.
