At FITUR 2026, Volvo Buses handed over two new Volvo B13R coaches to Spanish operator Alsa. These 15-meter vehicles deliver power, efficiency, and modern safety features in one package.
Each coach uses a 500 hp 13-litre engine. Moreover, Volvo says they cut fuel consumption by 9% to 15% compared to the previous model. That’s a big win for operators managing tight margins and emissions targets.
Importantly, the engines also run on HVO (hydrotreated vegetable oil). This renewable fuel can reduce lifecycle carbon emissions by up to 90%. As a result, fleets can adopt it immediately—without waiting for full electrification.
Smart tech further boosts performance. For instance, ISO Flow reduces fuel waste during acceleration. Similarly, I-See uses GPS and road data to adjust speed automatically. Consequently, rides become smoother and fuel use drops—especially on hilly routes. Additionally, the latest Volvo I-Shift transmission improves drivability and economy.
Safety also gets a major upgrade. Specifically, new driver assistance systems better detect pedestrians and cyclists. Inside the cab, dynamic steering and an articulated wheel significantly cut driver fatigue. In fact, Volvo designed the cockpit with long-haul comfort as a top priority.
Both coaches came from Volvo’s Borås plant in Sweden. Notably, the factory runs on 100% renewable energy. Therefore, the carbon footprint of production not just operation—drops considerably.
For fleet managers, these Volvo B13R coaches mean real operational shifts. First, lower fuel costs improve total cost of ownership. Second, using HVO may require new fuel contracts. Third, features like I-See call for updated driver training and smarter route planning. Furthermore, maintenance schedules could change with the new transmission.
Benefits add up quickly. Smoother acceleration cuts idling. Chassis lowering improves stability at high speeds. Better ergonomics help retain drivers. And HVO use supports cleaner emissions reporting particularly for ESG compliance.
Of course, real-world results depend on routes, loads, and driving style. Nevertheless, even small gains multiply across a large fleet. Over time, they deliver serious savings and meaningful sustainability progress.
In short, these Volvo B13R coaches do more than replace old buses. Instead, they help operators move toward smarter, greener, and more efficient intercity transport starting today.
